Firefox Unable to Load fxTrade

I get stuck on 40% loading bar while using OpenJDK.

I see _exactly_ the problem you describe when I try to run fxTrade on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with OpenJDK installed; fxTrade doesn't run under OpenJDK. It was apparently written specifically for Sun Java and it fails to load on machines that have only OpenJDK available.

Oracle withdrew the license for Sun Java in August 2011. In February 2011, Canonical removed Sun Java from the software repositories and sent out a dummy update package that nuked Sun Java on all Ubuntu Linux installations. OpenJDK is now the default Java from Oracle; Sun Java is dead.

My current Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS installation ("Lucid Lynx") has only OpenJDK on it and it can't run fxTrade any more -- although it used to do so. I can visit the official Java Test Page at http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp and the test program runs fine on Ubuntu Linux, but fxTrade won't run at all on the same machine. The test page reports I'm running Sun Java 6, although there isn't a trace of Sun Microsystems Java anywhere on my machine; as far as the test page is concerned OpenJDK is equivalent to Sun Java.

Really, Oanda needs to rework fxTrade to make it run reliably with OpenJDK. It's just a matter of time before something similar happens on Windows machines, so be forewarned!!

It would be interesting to hear from Apple Mac OS X users who have been running Apple's custom flavor of Java for a while whether they can run fxTrade on their machines.

No pips were harmed in the making of this fortune.

Hi BigHatNoCattle,

OANDA is aware that fxTrade does not run with OpenJDK 6, but it should run with OpenJDK 7. OpenJDK 7 is available with Ubuntu.

Please try this solution.
